Event Summary

This Symposium will examine the severe economic, environmental, and human rights implications the global recession will pose for Africa, while exploring how the international community should respond. Register online.

Event Description

This year, the American University International Law Review will focus its annual Symposium on the global financial crisis and its effect on Africa, the world's most impoverished continent. It was initially predicted that Africa would be generally insulated from the economic shock caused by the recent global recession; however, with African economies experiencing greater incorporation into the world market and with Sub-Saharan countries largely dependent upon foreign aid/foreign direct investment for economic survival, Africa may feel the economic downturn just as greatly as, if not greater than, any other global region. This Symposium will examine the severe economic, environmental, and human rights implications the global recession will pose for the Continent, while exploring what the international community's response should be under foreign direct investment treaties, World Trade Organization regulations, the Kyoto Protocol, and the UN Millennium Development Goals agreement.
