10 Powerful Prayers for Suffering

If you are going through a difficult time in your life, it can feel like it will never end. Here are 10 powerful prayers for suffering.

Prayer for Someone Who is Suffering
Abba, Father, You are good, good Father, but sometimes this is so hard to see when we are suffocating in misery. Our perspective is so limited and narrow, Father. Help us to surrender control up to You. Today, I pray especially for my friend, that they may experience a deep closeness with You, unlike anything they have known before. Be so real to them. In their suffering, help them to hold on, knowing that You will work even the bad things in life for their good. You have told us that there is time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens. There is a time to be born and a time to die, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. We are more than conquerors through You who loves us, and nothing in any of these seasons will be able to separate us from the love of You, Father. I rejoice in Your holy name and pray that You fill my friend’s heart with Your unfailing love. In the name of the One who will give us the victor’s crown, Jesus, my King. Amen.

Prayer for Healing
Jesus, the Great Physician, You are our Savior who cares for us. Even our sickness and pain can be made beautiful through You. I know my friend longs for healing, and if it is in accordance with Your will, I pray that You heal them and cure what is wrong with their body. Give them hope and comfort that comes from Your Spirit – fix their eyes on the hope that one glorious day You will return, and all will made be right in the world. I ask all these things by Your Spirit and in Your holy name. Amen.

Prayer for Mercy
Gracious and merciful God, You said that it is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. You said that You have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Without fail, You save those who turn to You. The path that my friend is walking is beset with difficulties and misery. Lord, have mercy on them and purify their heart. In Your love, lift them out of this situation. In the name of Jesus, who is with us in our suffering. Amen.

Prayer for Comfort
Heavenly Father of all comfort, thank You for showing us mercy by accepting us into Your family. I know my friend knows this, and may this truth be of special significance to them at this time. Let them take comfort in the fact that You have won the victory and that You will wipe every tear from our eye on that final day. Remind them that even though they walk through the valley of the shadow of death, You are with them, right by their side. You walk alongside us, and when we grow too weak, You carry us. By Your Holy Spirit, relieve their suffering and focus their heart and mind on Your unconditional love. Amen.

Prayer for Release from Anxiety
Precious Holy Spirit, You are our help in times of need. I pray for this person experiencing anxiety – I do not know how to help them. But You do. Through Your Spirit, work in their heart and mind to calm their thoughts. Help them to cast all their anxieties onto You and to know Your incredible care for them. Give them faith and a conviction of the certainty of Your promises. Fill their lungs with the breath of Your peace. To You may they hope, and to Your Son may they cling. Amen.

Prayer for Peace
Jehovah Shalom, our God of peace, help my friend to experience Your perfect heavenly peace which transcends all understanding. Quiet their spirit and calm the turmoil of their soul. Settle the storms within them and give them the strength to weather the suffering caused by the trials around them. As they cry out to You, wash Your stillness over them and let them deeply feel within their being that You are God. Let them rest in the embrace of the Prince of Peace who has overcome this world. Amen.

Prayer for Perseverance
Lord of heaven’s armies, You sent Your Son to show us that there is a reward for those who last to the end. I pray to you today on behalf of my friend who is suffering and needs Your godly grit to push through their trials to the other side. You know their hurt, Lord. They are like the children of Israel, standing in front of the Red Sea and surrounded on every side by Pharaoh’s soldiers. They cannot see the shoreline beyond. Part the Red Sea for them, Lord. Whip up Your mighty wind to part the sea and make a way where there is no way. You have overcome the world, Lord. Do it again. Amen.

Prayer for Faith
Lord, my Living God, You are our loving Creator who instilled us with purpose. Lord, even though I stand in the promises contained in Your Word, I understand the struggles my friend is going through as they bend under the weight of their suffering. Strengthen them, Father. Give them a resolute faith that endures all trials. Give them a faith the moves mountains and believes that You will give them what they ask for in prayer. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Hope
O Lord, my Miracle-Worker, I long for that day when You will restore all things, and every tear will be wiped from our eyes. My soul hopes in the surety of Your Word and the hope that You give. My friend is suffering and in distressing pain in this night of trial. Give them hope that joy and laughter will come in the morning. You, Jesus, are the firstborn from the dead and the guarantor of life forevermore. It is in the God of hope that fills us with all joy and peace in believing that we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Indwell Your Holy Spirit in my friend, and bring the hope of eternity with You and life everlasting, where there will be no more suffering, no more pain, and no more mourning. Amen.

Prayer for Blessings
Heavenly Father of blessings, You say that blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Bless my friend who is suffering, Father. Lead them beside quiet waters and refresh their soul. Guide them along the right paths and comfort them in this dark time. Shine Your face on my suffering friend. May they experience a new level of how good You are. Even though they suffer, let them see the way You continue to pour out Your spiritual blessings on them in their life. Bless them and turn their tears into laughter. I pray this, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
