Here are some good Novena prayers for the dead.
God of Power, I thank You for who You are! I cry out to You in my trouble, in my pain and grieving, and I know that You will deliver me from my distress. Your word tells me that You will bring me out of darkness and the shadow of death. You will burst my bonds apart. Father, help me rejoice in knowing that regardless of what binds me, including death, You will free me from all of my pain, Amen.
Psalm 107:13-14
Precious Lord, the scriptures state that the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned. Jesus, I thank You for being the “great light” who shines in the darkest places of the human soul and shines even as one experiences death. I find peace in knowing that one who passes away is not separated from You by death because Your light still shines upon them, Amen.
Matthew 4:16
Prince of Peace, even though an individual may walk through the shadow of death, we should fear no evil, for You are with us. Your rod and Your staff are a comfort to us! God, You are awesome because even in death, You are with us. You never leave nor forsake us. Thank You for being the source of comfort in times of difficulty. Thank You for being my peace in times of great distress, Amen.
Psalm 23:4
Eternal Savior, although this period of grieving is hard, I find hope in knowing that whoever hears Your word and believes in You will have eternal life. You sent Your only begotten Son for us. Those who believe do not come to judgment but pass from death to life. I find peace in knowing that although my loved one has passed, because they knew and believed in You, they are living the life that I strive for with You in heaven, Amen.
John 5:24
Oh Lord, now if we have died with You, we believe that we will also live with You. I know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death He died, He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He lives to God. I thank You for the hope that this word has given to me and to my loved one who has passed away. There is peace in knowing that they have passed into a new life with You, Amen.
Romans 6:8-10
Wonderful Counselor, the scriptures indicate that there is a time for everything, including death. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable put on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written that “Death is swallowed up in victory.” I rejoice in knowing that death has no sting, Amen.
1 Corinthians 15:53-55
God of Creation, I magnify Your name for You are the Good Shepherd. I know that the individual who passed was a sheep who heard Your voice, You knew them, and they followed You. Thank You for the eternal life that You gave them. I know that they will never perish and will never be snatched out of Your hand, for You have kept them under Your precious wings, Amen.
John 10:27-28
Beautiful One, we have been set free from sin and have become slaves of You. The fruit that we receive leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. Thank You for the gift of eternal life that You have given to my brother/sister in Christ! The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of You is eternal life in Christ Jesus, my Lord. Thank You for ensuring that death is not the end. Instead, it is the beginning of eternity with You, Amen.
Romans 6:22-23
King of Kings, thank You for the overwhelming peace that my brother/sister in Christ is experiencing now that he/she has passed. In Your kingdom, brought to fruition by Jesus Christ, the world is a place where You will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. There is no more distress, Amen.
Revelation 21:4
Majesty, truly, truly, You say to us that whoever believes in You has eternal life. You are the bread of life. I am comforted in knowing that death does not mean the end for us. Instead, it is the beginning of life in glory with You. I thank You because just as bread sustains the body, You have sustained the soul through eternal life for all who believe in You, Amen.
John 6:47-48
God of Love, I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of You in Christ Jesus, our Lord! Lord, not even death can separate one from You and Your abounding love. I thank You for surrounding me in this time of great loss and difficulty, Amen.
Romans 8:38-39
Heavenly Father, You do not want me to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that I do not grieve like the rest of mankind who have no hope. For I believe that Jesus died and rose again. I believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him. I thank You, Lord, because I know that those who have passed have passed in eternity with You and I will see them again, Amen.
