The infant baptism performed in Catholic and Episcopal churches is referred to as a Christening. This tradition signifies the spiritual cleansing and rebirth of the child. Several verses in the Bible indicate that we are born with a sinned nature. Receiving this spiritual cleanse is just one of the sacraments a child may receive from the Church. Here are some great Christening Bible verses to help inspire this religious tradition.
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” | 2 Timothy 3:15
“And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.’ And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.” | Acts 16:31-33
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:” | 1 Peter 2:2
“Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” | 1 Peter 3:21
“Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.” | 1 Corinthians 11:1-2
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” | 1 John 1:7
“But Jesus called them [unto him], and said, ‘Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.'” | Luke 18:16
“But Jesus said, ‘Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.'” | Matthew 19:14
“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” | Galatians 3:27
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” | 1 Corinthians 12:13
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” | John 3:16
“For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.” | 1 Samuel 1:27
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” | Mark 16:16
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” | Galatians 2:20
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” | Romans 6:3-6
“Lo, children [are] a heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward.” | Psalms 127:3
“One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” | Ephesians 4:5
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” | Acts 2:38
