When a family member or friend is sick or reaches the end of their life, it can be difficult to bring them comfort and aid. These strong Catholic prayers for the sick and dying aim to bring peace and protection to the afflicted.
Eternal God, Jonah was swallowed up by the fish for three days and three nights which resulted in him turning to You through prayer so that he would come out of the fish’s belly. You spoke to the fish and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. I too pray that You speak to my sickness and my illness (including terminal illnesses) so that I can be healed by You. I believe in Your word and in Your divine power, Amen.
Jonah 1:7, 2:1 & 2:10
God of Resurrecting Power, You rose Lazarus from the dead so that when they rolled back the stone to the tomb, Lazarus came out. You have power over death. Your words have power over death for it was when Jesus said “Lazarus, come out” that Lazarus came with his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Lord, I pray for Your healing word over my life. I believe that my illness too can “come out,” Amen.
John 11:41-45
Miracle Worker, when You called the twelve disciples onto You, You gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. I declare that by Your stripes I am healed and by Your power, I am healed! I pray that You heal all manner of sickness and disease within me so that I can be made whole by You, Amen.
Mark 16:15
Holy God who art in Heaven, hallowed is Your name. Precious God, I come boldly unto the throne of grace, that I may obtain mercy and find grace to help in my time of need, in times of sickness and in times of death. I come to You seeking a type of healing that will transform my current situation because I believe in Your power. I know that You are the God of transformation, Amen.
Hebrews 4:16
Righteous God, I have prayed many prayers about my sickness and requests for healing, but it is the prayer of faith that will save me and will cause You to raise me up. Father, forgive me for my sins so that nothing will hinder me from my healing. I confess my sins to You, and I pray that I may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. In Jesus’ powerful name, Amen.
James 5:15-16
Holy Father, I know that in Your house are many rooms. If it were not so, Jesus would not have told humanity that He went to go and prepare a place for us. As scary as the thought of death is, there is something greater than death for me – everlasting life. I have a place with You in heaven. I know that I will never be alone even through my sickness. I know that death cannot and will not ever separate me from You, Amen.
John 14:7
Mighty God, nothing is too hard for You to accomplish. Your word says that You give Your people eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of Your hand. In all of the uncertainty, the pain and the deterioration of health, I know that nothing can take me away from You. I will always be Your child. When I am ill, I am Yours. When I am in pain, I am Yours. When my life here on earth ends, I am still Yours, Amen.
John 10:28
Undefeated Warrior, You are the resurrection and the life! Whoever believes in You, though he will die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in You shall never die. Precious Savior, I believe in Your word, for I know that I will live and never die through You! My eternal life rests in Your hands, and I know that my soul shall find rest and peace in You. Thank You for being my strength and my peace in my time of great difficulty, Amen.
John 11:25-26
Dear God, the scripture states that there was a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” Help me to comprehend that death in You promises me peace for eternity. Death in You is a gift. “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” I thank You because in You I am guaranteed a type of rest that the world has never given me, Amen.
