7 Powerful Prayers for Ash Wednesday Lent

Ezekiel 9:4
Eternal God, we thank You for this special day – Ash Wednesday. We gather to remember the importance of repentance and turning from our sins because life on earth is only temporary. You commanded that those in Jerusalem who sigh and grieve over all the repulsive acts that were being committed should be marked on their foreheads for they desired righteousness. I pray that as we reflect, we aim to be like those individuals: disgusted by sin so that we can be like You, Amen.

Genesis 3:19
Lord of Above All, I thank You for life. I thank You that our time on earth is not promised, because uncertainty leaves less room for complacency and contentment. There are many tasks that we can carry out on earth, but we will not have the opportunity to do so forever as one day we will return to the ground. For we are dust and to dust we shall return. I pray that on Ash Wednesday we reflect upon our lifestyles so that we know we will return to peace with You, Amen.

John 3:16
Righteous God, I worship and glorify Your Name! You gave Your only begotten son so that whosoever believes in You does not perish but has eternal life! Father, I thank You for the precious gift that You have given to us and I am so grateful for the sacrifice. I pray that I remember this great sacrifice as I too give up something during this upcoming period of lent, Amen.

Job 42:5-6
King of Kings, I lift up Your Name because You deserve endless praises. I had heard of You but now my spiritual eyes see You. Therefore, I despise myself and I repent in dust and ashes. Father, I pray that You forgive me for all the things I did that my flesh desired as my eyes have now been open and I have a heart to fulfil my spiritual desires. I pray that on this special day, we push deeper in our spiritual awareness and align our hearts with You, Amen.

Joel 2: 12-18
Eternal Saviour, You declared that Your people must return to You with all their entire heart with fasting and weeping and mourning. I pray that we forget the materialistic things and render our heart and not our garments. I pray that significance is placed on our inner being so that we can make disciplined and carefully thought out sacrifices for this lent period. Let us return to You whole-heartedly and let our praises rise, Amen.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15
Dear Majesty, Your love has compelled me, because I am convinced that Your Son (Jesus) died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. Lord, this is the perfect time to reflect from a non-worldly view; I pray that I focus on standing right with You, Amen.

Psalm 51:1-3
Holy God have mercy on me, according to Your unfailing love; according to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness and guilt and cleanse me from my sin. I pray that I become conscious of my transgressions and acknowledge them so that I can be a better reflection of You. Father, I pray that You accept my sacrifice during this period, Amen.
