2 Corinthians 4:6 Devotional

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
-2 Corinthians 4:6

In the dark, empty void of space, a Word came from nothing. A nanosecond later, a brilliant light burst forth from nothingness, illuminating the darkness and bringing life and light streaming across galaxies. In mere days, a world was formed, water gushed forth, plants grew up, and life spread across what previously was deep dark nothing.

When the light came forth from nothing, God called it good.

The creation account in the book of Genesis is a story filled with hope and joy. Where there was hopeless nothing, the Creator brought joyful something to fill the void. God’s love was so vast that He desired to share it with a creation that depends on Him for life and light. In a momentary display of His power, God created everything.

The physical miracle of creation occurs spiritually each and every day as men and women around the world place their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In the very moment that a believer prays to be forgiven of their sins, God speaks life into their soul and a universe of life pours out from what was once sinful nothing. Just like creation, God declares that individual good. What a glorious truth!

The apostle Paul understood this moment of new birth all too well. Traveling the road to the city of Damascus, Paul was visited by Jesus – and the life-changing light of Christ changed him forever. No longer was Paul the Christian-killing Pharisee, he was now a beloved, forgiven church planter! From the dark sinfulness that Paul didn’t even know was inside him, the life of God burst out and changed the world forever!

What about you? Have you experienced the light of God shining from within you? Have you taken the step to place your faith in Christ? When you do, what was once nothing will be filled with Christ’s love and purpose. You will no longer live in hopeless nothingness. You will be truly something – a beloved son or daughter of Christ!

Questions For Reflection on 2 Corinthians 4:6

#1 Imagine the moment that the universe was created at the Word of God. Can you imagine that same glorious moment happening in your heart? What does that make you think and feel today?

#2 The Creator of the Universe is still creating – bringing lost souls to new life every day through those who have experienced His love. Have you shared your hope with someone who is living in darkness today?

Prayer

Lord God, Your power was shown in mighty ways when You created the heavens and the earth. How much more glorious was the moment that you spoke life into my dead bones and restored me from my sinfulness? I pray that You would remind me of that moment that Jesus gave me life, and that I could share that joy with someone else today. May the light that shone from the darkness of eternity shine through my life today, tomorrow, and forever!
