Proverbs 14:12 Meaning of in the End It Leads to Death

Proverbs 14:12
“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”

Explanation and Commentary of Proverbs 14:12

Sin can seem so plausible to the man or woman who wishes to rationalize his or her actions and evade the truth of the actual motives. Not only can we fool ourselves into sinning, but we can elicit support from other sinners, either by gathering around us similar fools who we know to think as we do, or to share half-truths and false motives with those from whom we feign to seek “wise counsel.”

Other times, we simply do not know, whether because we do not yet know God, or because we know him and are yet immature. It behooves the Christian to read the Bible daily and to regularly bump up against those passages that seem the most difficult to accept. These are usually the parts that contradict the current cultural perspectives. It is not abnormal for the newer Christian to find many of these kinds of things, but with reading the Bible and the illumination of the Holy Spirit, along with seeking wise counsel, these wrong “ways” will fall one by one.

In our day, and probably in every age prior, there are those who make declarations with such confidence that even the skeptics are tempted to believe them. This is a mind trick of the devil, and confident assertions (1 Tim 1:7) should be considered with extreme prejudice.

Breaking Down the Key Parts of Proverbs 14:12

#1 “There is a way that appears to be right,”
Jesus Christ referred to himself as the Way. He is the way, the truth, and the life (Jn 14:6). But there are other “ways” that seem plausible upon first glance, especially when the particular path is wide and densely populated.

#2 “but in the end it leads to death.”
While it is true that much of life is all about the journey and the process, it is important to raise one’s head above the trees every so often to make sure the destination is life and not death. So many wide pathways to death seem attractive, but some wisdom and foresight will prevent all sorts of errors in this regard. Happily, God has not left us without his Holy Spirit, his Word, and his Church as a means of grace to guide us to the path of life.
