John 6:37 Meaning of Whoever Comes to Me I Will Never Drive Away

John 6:37
“All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.”

Explanation and Commentary of John 6:37

Jesus reveals an important and mysterious truth about the nature of salvation. Those who come to Jesus and choose to follow him have been drawn to him mysteriously and irresistibly by his Father. This is good news because he also says that he will never drive them away. Thuswise, the great and mysterious doctrines of election and eternal security go hand-in-hand. It is a great mystery when a man or woman of the world, who had formerly walked in darkness (Eph 2:1-2), can see the light and be drawn to it, or smell the aroma of Christ and smell the goodness and power of eternal life.

When Jesus debated the religious authorities, who rejected him out of envy, he made it clear that their rejection of him came from the fact that Satan, rather than God was their father (Jn 8:44). Anyone who was a true follower of the Father in heaven would recognize that the Father was in Christ, and Christ was in the Father.

If you feel that you have fallen away from Jesus, the good news is that you can always go back to him. Repent and turn to him, learn his ways, and walk with him. He will never let you go. If you truly belong to him, he will never drive you away. On the contrary, he has been with you all along waiting for the day you will turn back to him.

Breaking Down the Key Parts of John 6:37

#1 “All those…”
All who truly come to Christ for salvation will remain saved for eternity. Those who seem to follow Jesus and then give up and leave the path never truly belonged to him (1 Jn 2:19).

#2 “…the Father gives me…”
Jesus’ Father in heaven is also our Father by way of the adoption accomplished by his Son on the cross for us. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are” (1 Jn 3:1)!

#3 “…will come to me,”
It is a miracle when a corrupt soul is drawn to the goodness of Christ. We must proclaim Jesus and show him to the world in order for those who are called to hear the truth and be saved.

#4 “and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.”
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand” (Jn 10:28). Once we truly belong to Jesus, he will hold on to us and we will not fall away.
